Artist Statement

I work with oil paint on paper, canvas or board, exploring minimalism and non representational abstraction. With my current painting practice I'm experimenting with: texture; a limited colour pallet; small canvas size; and the method of paint application (or removed) with a squeegee or rag, rarely a brush.  I work quickly and spontaneously with thin applications that allow the texture of the canvas to show through. I'm interested in experimenting with controlling the application of paint on the one hand and balancing this with allowing the paint, and painting, its own life to end up where it wants to be.

I don’t usually map out my paintings ahead of time; working instead spontaneously and willy nilly. I like to play around with different ways of working with paint. I sometimes work quickly using thin applications that allow the texture of the canvas to show through, resulting in lighter paintings. Other times I work with layer upon layer of paint, applied with either a brush, pallet knife or rag which is then rubbed, scraped and scratched adding depth and complexity resulting in a heavier painting. I often rework paintings again and again; the finished work reflects the collision of new on top of old.

Originally from San Francisco, California I relocated to London in 2008. I’ve not pursued a formal art education, but have recently decided to focus on developing my painting practice which landed me at Turps Art School 2022/23 & 2023/24

I primarily make art to amuse myself.
